JUST IN: a NATO delegation is in kyiv, a first visit of this level since the start of the war
NATO Delegation Makes Historic Visit to Ukraine
Kyiv, Ukraine – First Visit Since Russian Invasion
A high-level NATO delegation, led by Supreme Allied Commander French Admiral Pierre Vandier, visited Ukraine this week, marking the first visit of this level since the Russian invasion began.
Focus on Ukrainian Participation in NATO Exercises
According to Pavlo Palisa, deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential cabinet, discussions during the visit centered on the role of Ukrainian soldiers in future NATO exercises.
“Particularly, they discussed participation in exercises as a simulated opposing force – the ‘Red Team,’” Palisa said.
The visit also addressed the development of the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Center (JATEC), inaugurated in early 2025, designed to enhance interoperability between Ukrainian and Alliance forces.
Ukraine Shifts From “Consumer” to “Producer” of Military Expertise
Kyiv has emphasized its growing role in the security arena, stating that it is no longer just a “consumer” of military expertise, but increasingly a “producer”.
“Ukraine is contributing actively to Alliance capabilities, sharing knowledge and expertise in modern warfare,” Palisa added.
“Hedgehog 2025” Highlights Drone Warfare Capabilities
The visit follows the May 2025 exercise “Hedgehog 2025”, which brought together over 16,000 soldiers from 12 NATO countries, alongside Ukrainian drone experts, in Estonia.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the exercise simulated a “contested and saturated” drone battlefield, exposing NATO vulnerabilities to modern drone warfare.
In one scenario, a battle group consisting of several thousand troops – including a British brigade and an Estonian division – carried out a simulated offensive.
“A team of around ten Ukrainians, playing the role of the adversary, simulated the destruction of 17 armored vehicles in half a day and executed around thirty additional strikes,” the report noted.
This performance underscored the growing importance of Ukraine’s unmanned aerial vehicle expertise and highlighted its strategic role within NATO’s defense planning.
Strengthening NATO-Ukraine Cooperation
The historic visit reflects a deepening collaboration between Kyiv and the Alliance. NATO officials stressed the importance of continuing joint exercises and training programs, signaling Ukraine’s integral role in regional security.
“This visit demonstrates NATO’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, while acknowledging the country’s evolving military capabilities,” said Admiral Vandier.
This visit represents a significant step in Ukraine’s integration into NATO operations and highlights the strategic importance of Ukrainian forces in shaping modern defense practices across Europe.
