Iran live updates: Trump confirms death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday announced “major combat action” against Iran, with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military and government sites during daylight hours. Officials said the massive operation prompted threats of Iranian retaliation and reports of missiles and drones in the area. “Our goal is to protect the American people by eliminating the imminent threat from the Iranian regime, which is an evil organization of very tough, terrible people,” Trump said in a video statement. U.S. officials said the operation could last several days, and Trump acknowledged there could be American casualties. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian have both been targeted by U.S. and Israeli attacks, according to three people familiar with the matter.
